Zack’s Favorite Day in France: La Fête de la Musique

Not sure when to plan your visit to France? Our co-founder and travel consultant Zack has a great suggestion for you.

There are many special days in the year, ranging from La Fête Nationale (Bastille Day) to the first serving of raclette when the weather turns autumn crisp. But, in my mind, you can’t find much better than the unique and beautiful experience of La Fête de la Musique, which has been celebrated every year on June 21st since 1982.

So what makes La Fête de la Musique so special? It is a nationwide celebration so you can equally enjoy dancing on the cobblestone streets of Paris or basking in the melodies of a live band in a quaint plaza in Provence. Seemingly, every nook and cranny of the country transforms into a stage for musicians of all stripes, and guess what? You’re invited to the show.

A Symphony of Streets

Introduced by the French Ministry of Culture, Fête de la Musique, also known as World Music Day, has grown from a grassroots movement in Paris to an international phenomenon celebrated in over 120 countries. But I have not experienced anything like it outside of France, where music, culture, and the joy of summer solstice blend into one harmonious soirée.

On this day, France morphs into a live jukebox, echoing genres from classical and jazz to hip-hop and electro across its cities, towns, and even villages. Whether you’re in the bustling lanes of Lyon, the scenic shores of Nice, or the historic heart of Bordeaux, every artist, amateur or professional, is encouraged to perform. Essentially, It is a block party across the country. I recommend getting a nap so you can stay out late wandering in the long summer light.
If you want something more structured, there are official events and programming on the Fête de la Musique website, but this list is not all-encompassing. One of my favorite performances from last year was a happenstance concert put on by a group of high school students playing their instruments on the side of the Louvre. Whether you’re a fan of classical music or a techno enthusiast ready to rave, there’s a beat with your name on it.

Your Backstage Pass to France

La Fête is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and infectious spirit of the French. From solo travelers to families, there’s something magical about joining a crowd of strangers to celebrate the universal language of music.

Don't just take my word for it; come experience it for yourself. And remember, in the words of the famous French composer Claude Debussy, “La musique est l'espace entre les notes.” (“Music is the space between the notes.”) So, if your schedule allows, aim to plan your travels to include June 21st and fill those spaces in your life with unforgettable memories.
