Annecy in the Alps: Venice on High

Nestled in the Haute-Savoie region of France, Annecy is a storybook town beside a picturesque lake. Often referred to as the "Venice of the Alps," this charming spot is a place to consider visiting if you want to enjoy nature and escape big city energy. On that note, it is an easy train ride from Paris, taking only about four hours with many direct or single-connection options available to get you to this mountain gem. Here are a few top spots to highlight in this lovely destination and a favorite of France for All.

Marvel at Lake Annecy

Lake Annecy, the jewel in the crown, is famed for being one of the cleanest in the world. In warm months, visitors can indulge in a variety of watersports, from swimming and sailing to diving and paddle-boarding. Our favorite activity is to rent a bike and make the entire circuit around the scenic lakeside path. Electric and regular bike rentals are available around town.

Stroll Through the Old Town

Annecy's vieille ville (Old Town) is a vibrant tapestry of winding canals, cobbled streets, and pastel-colored buildings, adorned with overflowing flower boxes. Begin your tour at the Palais de l’Isle, a 12th-century castle on an island in the middle of the Thiou canal, now serving as a local history museum. After soaking up some local knowledge, meander through the narrow lanes, popping into boutiques and pausing at a café to savor a pastry beside the water.

Discover Château d’Annecy

Perched atop a hill and offering panoramic views over the town and its lake, the Château d’Annecy is a must-visit. Once home to the Counts of Geneva, the castle now houses a museum with art and historical exhibits. The climb up to the château is a delightful adventure in itself and helps to work off some of the delicious meals you'll enjoy.

Feast for the Senses at the Local Markets

No visit to Annecy would be complete without experiencing its vibrant markets. The market on Rue Sainte-Claire is filled with local vendors selling cheeses, meats, fresh produce, and treats. It’s the perfect spot to pick up picnic supplies before heading to the lake, or simply to enjoy the lively atmosphere. It is open from 7 AM to 1 PM on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with Sundays being the busiest.

An Animated Festival

A counterpart to the world-renowned Cannes Film Festival in the South of France, Annecy hosts its animated film festival every June, attracting artists and celebrities from around the world. This vibrant event showcases the best in international animation, making it a highlight for film enthusiasts.

Annecy's blend of natural beauty, historical richness, and lively cultural scene makes it a unique destination. Whether you’re cruising on Lake Annecy, exploring the nooks and crannies of its old town, or enjoying the local cuisine, Annecy promises a delightful escape filled with lasting memories.
